The Harlech Triathlon
Posted on April 6th, 2010
It’s been called the friendliest – and most beautiful – triathlon in the country. Designed with beginners in mind, you’ll be in good company at the Harlech Triathlon, the second 2010 event.
With just over a month to go, your training should be in full swing - already you are probably feeling fitter and healthier.
But if you are experiencing a lull, or your motivation has taken a turn for the worse don’t despair – keep thinking about the scenic route with its beach, sand dunes and spectacular castle.
You will find lots of tips to help you train and keep motivated on the Multipower website at www.multipoweruk.com but to keep you going here a few pointers.
Swim: build stamina by gradually increasing the distance you swim without resting and also the total distance swum in a session. Build up the distance until you can swim at least 20 lengths without stopping and 50 lengths in a single session.
Bike: If you are training indoors you might be suffering from boredom – join a spinning class or train with friends – much more fun than training alone and the peer pressure can push you to try harder. In training, alternate bike and run to simulate a triathlon - warm up and then alternate 10 minutes on a bike followed by 5 minutes on a treadmill.
Before race day you should complete at least one continuous ride lasting 2 hours. This is more than the length of the cycle leg so you can be confident on the day. Build up your time in the saddle gradually.
Run: Try to develop an efficient running technique – it will minimise the effort required and reduce the risk of injuries. There are many aspects to good running technique but the main things to concentrate on are: stride length (not too long, it is more efficient to take a shorter quicker stride); body position (allow your body to tip slightly in front of the vertical); relaxed shoulders and arms (use your arms to complement your leg stride); breathing (aim for even, relaxed breathing).
Make sure you are fuelling your workouts correctly. Endurance events like triathlons make heavy demands on your body and your diet is key to getting the best results. Check out Multipower’s Active Range -- it provides all the sports nutrition you need for every phase, before, during and after.
Always ensure you have an energy bar and electrolyte drink or recovery drink in your transition or kit bag to consume immediately after the race. Keep well hydrated throughout the event, top up your sports bottle with Iso Drink for a quick energy boost.
Here’s hoping the Harlech Triathlon will be your first of many!
