Blog - 2: Events versus training!

I seem to be entering a period where I am doing a lot of events. You read many things about targeting one main event and training for that, and while I chose the vitruvian in September as my goal race I seem to be overloaded in the run up.

So off to Scotland for the Etape, I went with a group of friends and treating this as a long training ride. The main thing I wanted to do on this ride was to consider my nutrition and test some new products. Getting up at 0530 (I can’t be the only person who does this regularly) I go for a Multipower flapjack bar. Not had one yet and before you eat it you think, god it's Heavy!

Tastes great, doesn't seem to sit on my stomach and by the time I get to the start line at 0715 I feel good and ready to go. I stick with the ISO drinks in my bottles and this worked well, no real hydration issues on 81 miles. 3 Multi Carbo Gels and an energy bar also helped me through.

Everyone heads back for a beer and BBQ apart from me and Ben, chocolate recovery bars, shake and 30 min's of stretching have me talking about the week ahead.

Work gets in the way of training and after losing Monday as a rest or training day (all day driving, thanks ash cloud) I am busy Tuesday and Friday.

I have been working hard on my swim speed and distance lately and hit the lake for 2000m on wed and a pool drill session on Thurs 8 x 200 on speed and 2 x 400 on technique drills. I also manage to get in a hill speed session which has left me shattered.

I have an aquathon at the open water swim planned for Saturday morning and some sleep for the afternoon.
